Avian Vets - Who Do You Choose?
|
How many of you are aware of the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) guidelines? How many of you have had cause to visit a vet at some point? How many of you ask questions when you put the life of your beloved pet in the hands of your vet? Did you know that the term 'Avian Vet' actually means nothing legally? Avian vets or 'experts' without the actual 'specialist' qualifications are nothing more than normal general vets. These vets may have a particular interest in avian medicine - but no specialist qualifications. Avian 'specialist' is another matter and these vets do 'specialise' in certain aspects of avian medicine. (However there are only 2 listed at this moment in time in the UK). Anyone can call themselves 'avian expert' - it means nothing. Did you know that in order to administer a drug to your bird (or other animal) which is not licensed for that particular animal - (and in the case of parrots not many drugs are actually licensed) - your vet should obtain your written consent and you should be made fully aware of what he/she is about to do and warn you of the possible side effects? |
How many of you have had birds or animals which have died under the care of your vet and you never asked what your bird/animal had been administered with - was it actually licensed? Don't think it won't happen to you. Don't assume complete trust. Please read the rest of this page before you make up your minds. |

Review of The Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 This is the first time in 40 years you have had a chance to put your views forward - don't miss the chance or you may have to wait another 40 years.... On average, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London (RCVS) receives about 800 complaints against veterinary surgeons annually (about 15 per week). Most of us hope that we will never have cause to complain to the RCVS and that if we do, our complaint will be dealt with fairly. But what if we do have cause to complain and our complaint is NOT dealt with fairly? Most of us assume this will never happen to us - right? Please read the following. this could have been your cockatoo or parrot, or dog, or cat, or horse ....:: Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and the Rimadyl Injection Please click on the link below and take a couple of minutes to read all the associated links and sign the petition. Remember, this is only important to those os us who have experienced problems with their vet and subsequently the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), and maybe not particularly relevant to you, (at this point in time). But what if sometime down the line you unfortunately had cause to complain? This issue would then become important to you.... If you are reading this you obviously have parrots or other animals, so put yourself for one moment in the place of the animals and owners aforementioned in the links. The petition below is requesting that the review of the Veterinary Surgeons Act currently on-going includes certain areas of protection for the client (which is you) when you visit your vet. It is not a petition denigrating all vets. Thanks for reading this. Review of the Veterinary Surgeons Act - Please sign the petition You do not have to be a UK resident to sign!!!
